ISBW S19 Ep29

NaNoWriMowhere Peace is lost book cover, angelic profile with wings and a sheild starts tomorrow! Are you participating? Are you ready? Author, editor, and long time NaNoWriMo municipal liaison Valerie Valdes joins us to talk about her new projects and how to tackle NaNoWriMo!

Don’t forget, Chaos Terminal comes out in ONE WEEK.

Transcript

Valerie Valdes 10:08:
…I wonder if there’s like enough NaNoWriMo people at this point who are published writers that it’s kind of lost some of that sheen of the amateur. Somehow I don’t know. But I definitely haven’t heard that as much as I feel like I also would occasionally see that kind of grump on social media. But yeah, I think that, that more and more writers, the benefit of NaNoWriMo, even if you’re a professional writer, and you write 100%, of the time all year round, is that you’re doing this together with other people who are also doing this thing. And even professional writers, a lot of them don’t write 50,000 words in a month, a lot of times, it’s a much slower pace, and it’s spread out over a longer period of time.

ISBW S19 Ep28

If you’re a creator, when someone wants to give you money, you say, “yes, please!”

I’m taking a break from podcasting to finish my book. Doing some housekeeping and then presenting an excellent interview with Wole Talabi, author of Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufon!

Transcript

Wole Talabi: 19:50- …And I’ve been to the British Museum several times. The last time I was there, I saw a few items in that I really wanted to, like, take with me, including the brass head of Obalufon, which is a real object. … I felt the urge to conduct a heist. So I just decided to write it into the novel.

Wrestling with the little person in my head who thinks she so smart…

Transcript

Mur Lafferty: 9:50(ish) I feel like the person is telling me that the idea is stupid. Or I shouldn’t write or won’t go anywhere, or I won’t sell it. I don’t feel like that person is a writer at all, I don’t feel like that person is involved with my writing career at all. This is not the editor who will help me look critically at a piece and make it better later. This is just like, some jerk yelling out the car window. Only the car is my head.

Short episode this time, and not having the best brain day. So I’m sharing with you because this happens to everyone.

Transcript

Mur Lafferty: And maybe what I write is crap, but I’ll never know unless I write it. And then I think lies the key. It’s not even allow yourself to write crappy first drafts, It’s: a pro thinks they suck, but they write it anyway. And there’s your Deep Thought for the Day.

S19 Ep25
I got to interview game designer turned YA romance writer James L. Sutter in this episode, and it was a blast. So much good stuff here! I also talk about my latest anger at ADHD and what I’m reading.

From the transcript:

James L. Sutter 34:10: And so it was hugely enlightening for me to see, sort of these authors were very talented and established, going through the same outline process, you know, struggling with their pitches, struggling with characters and realizing that like, oh, every great work of art, like starts out as a pile of garbage. And like, I can make a pile of garbage.

It’s June, and I have had some disappointments (She Podcasts, Live! and Blaseball), but at least I’m not worrying about travel so much. Got my 10k words turned into my agent, and lament the loss of the podcast community. But Tee Morris, Scott Sigler, and Christiana Ellis are all live streaming too. And so is Grant Baciocco!

(from the transcript)

Mur Lafferty  00:59

…Whatever you’re afraid of, you’re not alone. And the thing is about those fears, if everybody has them, no matter how successful you are, does it really have to do with writing?

What I’m Reading
I’m currently reading The Other Side of Infinity by Joan Smith, magical real world YA romance about seeing the future and wondering if you can make a difference.
