[DD] The Long-Awaited Kameron Hurley Social Media Episode!

At last, we have Kameron Hurley back to talk about the much-needed social media discussion! While nowhere near perfect, various social media services do have settings that you can tweak to protect yourself from trolls. We go over some, compare block and mute, and then we talk about World of Warcraft.

Ditch Diggers #100: HURLEY RETURNS

  • Matt and Mur come to you live for the monumental 100th episode of the Ditch Diggers podcast, with special guest, and one of their favorites, author Kameron Hurley!
  • Ditch Diggers’ history with problematic celebrity mascots and why they finally ended the bit is briefly discussed.
  • Things are terrible, but Hurley rightly points out all three of the people in this podcast episode have a lot to be happy about, and those things are covered, including Hurley’s Hugo nomination for Best Novel for THE LIGHT BRIGADE!
  • What did Nero actually play on the fiddle while Rome burned, and was it “Freebird?”
  • Hurley, prompted by Matt, discusses the epic years-long process of turning the barren lot on which resides her home into an amazing woodland that is often mistaken for a public park.
  • The inevitable topic of doing business and getting business done during the pandemic is finally discussed at length.
  • The discussion suddenly degenerates into explaining Animal Crossing to Matt, including the economics of turnips, hamsters in suits of armor and their love lives, hosting TV-style talk shows on your island, and the housing market and economics of home ownership in Stardew Valley.
  • Mur tries to come up with an innovative way to create media in/using Animal Crossing and/or online gaming, and becomes very irate at Matt and Kameron’s lack of ability to come up with something for her, despite them both offering wisdom (which is different from advice).
  • Episode 100 Q&A! What are the Ditch Diggers drinking and what is everyone’s favorite cocktail? Also, what’s the best career lesson/advice everyone has learned from something that was said to them that wasn’t meant/presented as career advice.
  • Final plugs for Matt’s debut epic fantasy novel SAVAGE LEGION (including Mur and Kameron schooling Matt on his poor marketing skills) and Matt and Mur’s shared birthday.

Ditch Diggers #51: End of the Year Spectacular, guest starring Hurley and Wendig!

  • The Ditch Diggers come to you live from Morgan Freeman’s Nicer-Than-Chuck-Wendig’s-Writing-Shed with special year-end episode spectacular guest co-hosts, Kameron Hurley and Chuck Wendig!
  • We briefly clarify who the guests are and who the hosts are, and talk about the momentous completion of the Hurley/Wendig Trilogy on Ditch Diggers (Matt insists there will be a “third act twist” which leads to an argument about what constitutes the third act in this scenario).
  • Everyone recaps their 2017 as writers. Hurley talks about throwing out two-thirds of a new book. Chuck talks about only focusing on a single book for a change (as he usually writes approximately 7,574 books per year). Mur talks about the sale and release of Six Wakes. Matt laments many personal hurdles that added height to professional hurdles.
  • Einstein had sex with everything, including James Joyce, which segues into Hemingway/Fitzgerald slash fic (briefly, but notably).
  • A digression into grandmothers, Nazi boots, radio turkeys, hills and valleys and the difference between the two (Matt is the only one confused by the old idiom, apparently).
  • The foursome discuss Hollywood, and the differences between the film/TV industry and the publishing industry.
  • Everyone looks ahead to 2018 and discusses their plans, hopes, and fears (spoiler: those are all basically the same thing).
  • The recent Patreon debacle, what happened, what it means, and what it signals for authors, and all freelance creators, in the future.
  • Everyone performs their final shilling of the year, and we wish everyone a much better 2018!

Writing Podcast News For Your Ear Holes

It’s been a banner few weeks! In the past 10 days or so, I’ve managed to get back onto a weekly schedule, writing podcast-wise. I guess this means my ADHD treatment is working, which is awesome.

So the new podcast plan: I’ll be doing ISBW and Ditch Diggers in alternating weeks. This week had ISBW #373 released on Monday, and next week will feature Ditch Diggers #38 with Tobias Buckell about “The Power of ‘No'”. I have episodes planned through May, and my brain fog has lifted, for the most part, which is making this planning so much easier.

(If you’re a Patreon subscriber, you get the podcasts as soon as I edit them, instead of waiting for release day. All the supporters got the Ditch Diggers episode today, for example.)

More writing podcast news outside the Murverse:

New writing podcast: Get To Work HurleyGet To Work, Hurley: Frequent Ditch Digger guest host Kameron Hurley has her own writing podcast now! She produced this podcast as a Patreon supporter goal, and she’s doing it for everyone who wants to listen. Episode one just dropped, and she’s as fun and natural on the mic as she is when she guest hosts Ditch Diggers.

New writing podcast: Critiki PartyThe CriTiki Party: This is an interesting idea for a writing podcast that my old friend, Travis Heermann, let me know about. Listeners can submit work that will be read aloud and critiqued on the podcast. If you wonder how to give a good critique, or just want to see how people critique common errors made by beginning writers, then check it out.

Do you not have enough writing and SF podcasts in your life already? Of course not! There are some other fine podcasts also are finalists for the Hugo Award for Best Fancast, and if you want to check them out, here they all are!
