S20 Ep33: In Which Mur and Jen Udden Discuss World Fantasy Con, Fan Fiction, and the Ever-Changing Publishing Landscape [Explicit]

“I think we’re about 10 minutes away from reinventing urban fantasy and paranormal romance.” – Jennifer Udden

(This post went live for supporters on November 12, 2024. If you want early, ad-free, and sometimes expanded episodes, support at Patreon or Substack!)

(NOTE: It occurs to me that I have three explicit episodes–32, 33, 34–in a row. But one was a casual interview, one was rage, and one was despair. So we will get back to nice clean episodes soon. I promise.)

At World Fantasy Con this year, I got to talk to my ex-agent Jennifer Udden, who shared her journey from agent to barista and back to agenting. We talked about the unique atmosphere of the con, the evolution of fan fiction in the literary world, and the growing acceptance of publishing professionals as writers. We also talk about Stardew Valley.

Jen opens up about her experience with self-publishing, the importance of creative outlets, and her plans to reopen submissions, focusing on adult fiction across various genres.

By popular demand we bring you Jennifer Udden, my former agent, current friend, and freelance editor! We attempt more LARPing but overall just chat.

NOTE, my producer usually cuts out the interaction with the live chat to make for a smoother experience for you, but with two hosts that made it harder so I decided to  just leave most of it as-is.

Ditch Diggers #97: Return of the Agents!

Mur and Matt come to you live from the guest room of the Ditch Diggers Manor House separated by shadow performance partitions and welcome their very own agents Jen Udden and DongWon Song back onto the show for the first time in over two years.

  • Much like Pepperidge Farm, Skype remembers (and is a receipt-keeping bastard).
  • DongWon and Jen are back to help the Ditch Diggers tackle the very important and difficult topic of abuse and harassment in publishing, particularly how authors and others can share information and their stories safely with each other and the community.
  • The panel discusses “grooming” behavior, what it is/can be, and how it’s pervasive in fiction and publishing communities.
  • Trusting your instincts when it comes to recognizing and processing abusive behavior directed towards you and others.
  • How to broach the subject of inappropriate behavior and “missing stairs” with others in your circles, communities, and industry, and the lack of structures in place to help.
  • What structural changes need to be made/put in place to supplement whisper networks about abuse and abusers, especially in situations like conventions and live events.
  • What individuals in positions of privilege and/or authority can do to be better allies to marginalized groups and people dealing with abusive behavior.
  • Twitter Q&A! The Agents offer their takes on freelancing in the time of COVID questions about publishing trends and marketing.
  • The Agents end the episode by shilling their clients’ forthcoming books, like pros (including Matt’s SAVAGE LEGION, preorder now).

Ditch Diggers #57: Agent Episode with DongWon Song and Jennifer Udden

  • Matt and Mur come to you from Morgan Freeman’s hyperbaric negotiation chamber with very special guest co-hosts and their very own book agents, DongWon Song of Howard Morhaim Literary Agency and Jennifer Udden of Barry Goldblatt Literary!
  • This episode is dedicated to Allie Wade, who asked the Ditch Diggers about contracts last June and is just not receiving the answer (Matt insists this was an elaborate training simulation to teach authors about the lengthy waiting process in publishing).
  • The Ditch Diggers and their agents discuss publishing contract clauses for which to watch out, standard clauses, and the nature of clauses themselves.
  • Matt asks DongWon and Jennifer to do a “Know Your Rights” Rundown and go over the major rights often requested by publishers in contracts, what those rights mean, and how to approach which rights to sell and which to retain as an author.
  • DongWon and Jennifer attempt to tackle the eternal question (their version of “Where do you get your ideas?” for authors) posed to agents, “What are you looking for?”
  • Our guest agents discuss the changing marketplace and economic culture of fiction, Amazon, and the vanishing book blogger.
  • Twitter Q&A! Topics include authors needing multiple agents.
  • The customary end-of-episode shilling!
