ISBW NaNoWriMo Special Episode 4 – Writing Out of Order

If you get stuck, don’t worry about it. Write the scene you feel comfortable writing, and make a note that the difficult scene is missing. Easiest done with Scrivener or note cards.

Thank you for this, Mur. I’ve only written poetry and one short story before, and I’ve always shied away from writing a novel (I have difficulty working out plots… kind of a big deal). I decided to try NaNoWriMo this year just to see if I can write something long, but things didn’t start out too well.

I barely hit the 1000-word mark the first day, didn’t write anything the second day, and only wrote about 900 words the third day. All of this left me feeling overwhelmed (and dispirited). After listening to today’s show, I said “screw it,” went to the first scene that felt interesting, wrote it, and kept jumping around working on whichever piece I felt like. By the end of it all, I’d added around 4900 words. Woo hoo! Thanks again. This podcast was exactly the encouragement I needed.
