Follow-up to Tuesday’s Suicide Girls post

Wow, Tuesday’s post about social networking and the link caused some discussion! I want to bring up a couple of points.

SG was chosen because it was on my mind, but it was a poor example as you have to register with the site to be able to comment. It doesn’t change the fact that many times I got a lot more comments on previous columns *and* this column created a lot more Twitter comments than ever before. There have been several times when a podcast post, or a blog post, on my sites (which require no registration) will cause discussion elsewhere. The registration fee isn’t the point- I just made a poor example.

I also have this problem with communication. It’s hard enough for me to stay on top of emails, but now I have to keep on top of DMs on Twitter, messages in Facebook, MySpace, blog comments, ISBW forum messages, and now SG has a messaging system. Someone was trying to tell me he’d communicated with me months ago, and I could find no proof in my email. Turns out he meant Facebook.

Everything is spread out- communication, commentary, etc. This is both good and bad. It’s exciting but overwhelming. It lets you connect with everyone- on the other hand, it lets you connect with EVERYONE.

The way I deal with it, right now, is to step back on occasion. I’m actually doing that right now. I’m only reading important emails, and I’m not online. I won’t be reading/moderating blog comments till tomorrow at the earliest, BTW, so don’t think you’ve had your comment rejected. (If you comment here; you could comment on Facebook, or Twitter, or… ;) )

Thanks for the continued discussion, wherever you choose to do it. It’s an interesting subject to me, and it is a beast to struggle with as we get more into social networking.

I have twitter DM’s, BBS messages, etc. set up to forward to my email. Most systems have a way to do that.

I agree with you about managing all the communication.

But i think a part of it comes from when you have managed to do what you originally intended to

    - Get your name and your writing out there to be read and appreciated by us.

To help achieve this you have put yourself out through many different channels:
    - myspace
    - twitter
    - facebook [and the 6 groups related to your work there]
    - secondlife,
    - ning
    - PFK novel site
    - your zombinc site
    - ISBW
    - murverse
    - messenging programs

You have to manage 10 streams of information coming to you and i can see how it would be so daunting a task.

A program that would let you manage this task would be great.

However not all sites allow you to redirect your feeds to a central email account. ( and with twitter i imaging it would get full very quickly).

My only remaining suggestion would be to hire some one like Wanda Clark (Lucille Ball’s personal secretary) to assist you in this .

This may sound funny since you identify yourself as a geek, but I think this is a popular girl problem :-) . In this realm, you are one of the cool kids and everyone wants to be near you. I doubt that the average blogger gets as much feedback as you do; I know I don’t! You are very good at putting yourself out there, and the overflow of messages is proof that your plan is working — maybe a little too well.

    Hey-
I’m a freelance writer as well, mostly on the Internets these days, and was wondering who you contacted at Suicide Girls in order to get your content published. The tone of SG is very similar to the snark I spew over at The Onion AV Club and I’m trying to rack up as many side projects as possible… I dig your work and would love to know how you got it out there at SG.

    Thanks,
    Cassie
