Back into running
A little over 13 years ago I quit smoking. As it’s still something I find myself craving, and also something I don’t mind other people doing around me, I don’t think of myself as a non-smoker, more like an ex-smoker.
In the same vein, I realized that because my attempts to get into running have been so sporadic that I usually just think of myself as a runner who’s not running right not (I’ve even got a category on this blog that’s “running” that I’m not sure if I’ve used yet). And yes, I do realize that’s very stupid.
So I’m back into it. I’m choosing one of the worst times to do so, because my body doesn’t react well to exercise in the cold weather. But dammit, I’m tired of feeling like a slug. I’ve (unintentionally) lost some weight in the past year or so, and would like to build up some muscle to level that out. I mean, sure, I could lay on the pie to get the poundage up, but I don’t think that’s ideal.
I started on Wednesday, and did my second run today. I’ve logged back into my account at runningahead.com to keep my log, and I’ll be posting the log here. I’m going for some sort of mixture of Couch to 5K and Nought to 30 min. Essentially they’re “start out slow, intervals of walking and running, and increase running each week.”
I also purchased What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami – a book talking about two things I love, one of them I’m having trouble with: running and writing. I’m enjoying it a great deal so far.
Anyway, my goal is to blog my running progress so maybe I can keep up with it. Rar.

Good for you! I’ve also lost some weight unintentionally this month, but in my case it’s a good thing. Whenever that happens, I try to talk myself into exercising more to keep it off. I also seem to get the exercise bug around the time that a new season of Biggest Loser starts. If only I could stick to exercising for more than a couple weeks . . .
There you go! Great job. Keep it up and let me know however and whenever I can help!
Excellent. If you want to get your geek on while running, check out this little toy: http://www.fitbit.com
There is nothing we cannot geek up a bit.
you? a smoker??
wow…if u ever make a tinker costume, u should incorperate that!
ur writing makes me pick up teh pen
ur running gets me off my flabby ass….sometimes
Is this the right time to yell “go, eagle go!”?
Have fun with the book from Haruki Murakami – I just discovered him and am thrilled so far…
Good for you. I quit smoking in 1992 (January 17, 1992, to be exact), and the only times I want to light back up are when I haven’t been able to run for a while. Not sure why, but if I go a week without a run, I start dreaming about smoking again.
Sometimes just getting motivated to get into workout clothes is a huge challenge. Way to go, and you’ll get back into shape in no time. I just started back running myself, after being sporadic for months.
I just started up with the running again as well after a long hiatus. I ended up getting an iTouch for my birthday. And then I found out about the Nike+ integration (www.nikeplus.com) so actually went out and bought a pair of nike shoes and the sensor. so now that i’ve got all this time and money invested I’d better use it!
I’m still playing around with it, the sensor is pretty much a pedometer that links to the iTouch wifi, but it seems like it’s pretty accurate. And now I get to compare myself with others, see my workouts, join various challenges (5 miles a week, fastest mile, etc.) and if they end up coming out with a wordpress widget I’m definitely putting it on my blog.
The voice of the coach is a bit annoying, but it’s got the “powersong”
The link below is one of my walk/runs during lunch last week in the gym.

If there’s any other mur bitches out there I’d love to join a running group and we can all get in shape together – every bit of encouragement helps!
Good for you, Mur. I’m proud of you. Keep it up!
Hey Mur, I’ve been restarting running as well… I’m a gadget freak, so my motivation is from a Garmin Forerunner 305. Being able to get home after a run, plog the 305 in a cradle and then see how much I stuck to my workout or how much above or below my last pace I was is awesome. Might be worth looking in to if you need that extra bit of motivation.
Any news? This blog entry got me back on the treadmil, and the two programs mentioned help fixed what I have been doing wrong in terms of times, distance, and building stamina.
