Stories of the Third Wave #18 - The Naked Bootleg
September 20th, 2008 • Related • Filed Under
Boy howdy - things have been a little crazy here since DragonCon, and I’m very sorry I haven’t been updating! News before we get to the podcast:
- Playing For Keeps won the Parsec Award for Best Novel! What a shock and honor! Congrats to the other nominees and winners!
- I now have an agent; I’m being represented by Byrd Leavell of The Waxman Agency.
- Playing For Keeps remains in the top 1% of books on Amazon.com.
- Playing For Keeps is now available on the Amazon Kindle (and the free - and DRM-free - PDF is still available as well - the Kindle Version is formatted for that platform).
This episode of Stories of the Third Wave is a report of a football game from - heh - Lafferty Field. Unfortunately the game is interrupted… Thanks to Randy Hinckley from The Naked Bootleg Podcast for this fun piece!

Thanks so much for putting PFK in Kindle format! I wanted it so bad, but I can’t make myself by real book since I got my Kindle. *hangs head* I did email amazon and had the PDF converted, but I still just bought the Kindle version. Keep up the great storytelling!

“It feels vaguely unsettling to have this device (shiny!) and enjoy it a lot (so shiny!) and yet when I consider my book coming out in a couple of weeks, I don’t want it to be available for the Kindle.” http://suicidegirls.com/news/geek/23268/
What cause the change of heart/mind? Inquiring minds want to know!
Oh, and once again, CONGRATULATIONS ON GETTING AN AGENT! w00t!

Remember the good old days when Mur was…, well, one of us? kudos for all the recent success are naturally due her - after all, she’s certainly earned it, but it seems like now all we receive from her is shameless self promotion and self-congratulatory dribble-drabble.
Compare posts from few years back and now, you’ll see what I mean.
Comment by Mur Lafferty on 22 September 2008:
Amenia, sorry you feel that way. I post under the impression that this is my blog where I should post news about myself and my work. And that’s even if, unlike a few years back, the news is actually good.
You’re perfectly welcome to unsubscribe from the blog and podcast; I wouldn’t want you to waste your time with promotion and dribble-drabble. I don’t want anyone experiencing my content who’s not enjoying it.
Comment by Mur Lafferty on 22 September 2008:
Anna- I realized that making it available on the Kindle doesn’t mean that I had to take down the free PDF (which you can also put on your Kindle, albeit without Kindle formatting). Making the book available in different platforms is a good thing, and I’ve had some wonderful emails from grateful Kindle users who were happy they had the proper formatting. If I had to choose Kindle-or-nothing, I wouldn’t have, but so far I’m happy with my decision.

Ms. Amenia Kelter, I am sorry but you are out of line, Mur has succeeded and you want to do is rain on her parade.
Mur is not ‘one of us’ she is the best of us. She has succeeded where others fear to tread. I know the idea of submitting one of my stories to anything like pro-markets scares the hell out of me. I am sorry you are bitter about her success, that is what it sounds like to me.
Tell me I’m wrong, Mur deserves her success. She is shouting from the rooftops and so am I. BTW, your post has inspired me. I am mailing a short story out to Analog today. So that I can say I’m trying my best, to Be like Mur.
Blessed Be,
Comment by DC Perry on 22 September 2008:
Congratulations, Mur, both for the release of Playing for Keeps in a new format and for the accusations of being a sellout. Nothing confirms that you’ve made it like people diving off the bandwagon because they don’t like seeing new people climb on. You might lose the readers who like your work because it’s their little secret, but you’ll more than make up for it in readers who enjoy your work for its own sake.
Comment by Anthony James Barnett - author on 22 September 2008:
Congratulations. You must be over the moon.
Comment by Dilwyn on 22 September 2008:
Mur - I For one am happy for your success, you have allowed me along on a wonderful ride and your fiction deserves the big new audience it is only now beginning to get. You have never put yourself on a pedestel but if others choose to put you there it would be churlish of you not to enjoy the view. ISBW has always talked about self promotion and much credit to you for doing it so well, as for self-congratulatory dribble-drabble, I’m not sure if Ms Kelter has realised but those pats on the back are not being self delivered. Well done Mur I couldn’t be more pleased for you.
Comment by Tamashii2000 on 24 September 2008:
Mur isn’t any more or less one of us then she was before. She simply has better news to advance, and far more guts - I wouldn’t be able to put out any type of story, not in written form and certainly not in verbal simply due to not wanting to deal with the negative people that appear out of the wood work.
Comment by Alphanitrate on 24 September 2008:
So if I understand this - Mur has sold out by finally getting paid for the free podiobook that over 20,000 people downloaded and listened to for free with no DRM? That’s crap. Everyone deserves to be rewarded for their work.
As for one of us.. amenia kelter please feel free to offer up your own material for us to enjoy.
( I looked for your site to see your materials - but all google found was a comment to fire a camera man during a test of analog/digital TV in NC. And a request on how to get through a dungeon level)
PFK has been out for LESS THAN A MONTH and has received a lot of success and exposure.
Mur, is excited about her accomplishments, as are we. And I’m sure you bragged about almost finishing the 25/25 levels with henchmen once you beat that clock).
If you’re tired of listening about her - go back to your TV where you can catch all the news about Paris Hilton, Hennifer, and the rest of that hollywood crap.
That is until she starts showing up on your TV, possibly being interviewed by Kevin Smith.
Comment by Tim Holtorf on 24 September 2008:
Your site is incredibly helpful. A friend of mine showed me your podcast and it’s most informative. I’ve been writing short stories and small serial series for a while, posting the rough aspects on my own blog. Currently I have two on the go. But your tips and hints really help. It’s even given me ideas for other ways to “sell” my stories.
I would just like to say thank you for a very informative site.

To amenia kelter:
I am sure that if YOUR work were anywhere near as successful as Mur’s has been, you would be shouting it from the rooftops.
Mur’s done an admirable job in a very tough industry and she should be lauded for her accomplishments.
I think you’ve been eating too many sour grapes. Check with us when your book is on Amazon, k?
Comment by Indiana Jim on 26 September 2008:
As far as I see it, Mur is still “one of us,” but one of us who happens to be making progress in her career.
Thanks for contributing to that whole Amazon Rush debate. It helped me rethink a lot of things.
