21 days to a habit?

I call bullshit. The News From Poughkeepsie has been going on for nearly 50 days now, and I still have to remind myself to do it. I remember JR Blackwell told me that on her daily project hit a slump around 29 days or so (Sorry, JR, I don’t remember the exact day) and I’m feeling the slump somewhere in the mid 40s. I’m losing my zeal for it and I don’t know why. I will keep pushing on, and hope that I get out of this. Day 50 is soon, I should look at that like a milestone.

In other news, we’re experiencing a rare June heatwave with temps consistently in the 100s. Oh, and the AC broke yesterday. We got it fixed today, and Jim showed some mighty MacGuyver moves to keep us cool using a window AC unit, some sheets, and an old candy wrapper.

Will be getting a new tattoo this week. See if I don’t. Nyah.

Now for some linkage:

An anthology I donated a short story to in order to benefit The Bay Area Food Bank, Writers For Relief Vol 2, is now available for pre-order!

Appearances by me in other podcasts: I read the Story So Far in the latest episode of Philippa Ballantine’s Chasing the Bard podiobook. My Balticon interview. My interview with The First Era Podcast.

Work inspired by The News From Poughkeepsie!

  1. I call bull on the 21-days-to-a-habit thing, too. I’ve gone through three separate periods in my life where I have tried to get in shape and exercised every day for weeks. I never got used to exercise, I never liked the exercise, and each time I got to a point where I said I just don’t want to do it any more. I stopped cold turkey. I’ve heard other people say they missed exercise or got antsy, but I never did.

  2. Hates the heat in in Raleigh area right now.

*shakes fist of rage at the sun*

  3. I blame the weather. I’ve been feeling the same way about Voice of Free Planet X lately, and that’s been going for 120 days.

Spring makes you want to lay in field and not do anything. Throw this heat wave on top of it, and well, even the strongest habits are broken.

  4. The 21-days thing is total bullcrap.

I had sex just once, and was hooked!

Ditto with breathing, eating, crapping, peeing…it’s a long list.

Exercise, eating healthy, daily wordcount–those are on a different list though. The 44-years-and-not-yet-a-habit list.

  5. I think it takes much, much longer to establish a habit. Things just disappear out of my brain. Is it possible that you actually have 7 different threads going with first sentences, characters, scenes and all?
