Palace Steps Apartments is a bizarre place - no one ever leaves. The huge, spanning apartments house up to three generations of families. children may leave for school, but they always come back. Young people intermarry, with the new family moving in with the woman’s parents. After several generations, the building is starting to get slightly inbred, though, and the scandal of a lifetime happens when someone falls in love with someone outside the building.

But this is completely real, according to Martin Scorsese. He relates that when he was a boy in NYC, entire Sicillian villages would pick up, move to America, and occupy a single apartment building. And if you wanted to marry your sweetheart from another village (i.e. the apartment building across the street), this was a *huge* scandalous deal, requiring a sitdown, etc.
