The News From Poughkeepsie - Day 35

Character Sketches Mondays:

Balticon update soon. For now we have:

In the world of alternate history- Charles (Chas) Huggins was the last of a rare breed of editors - the common sense fantasy editor. Upon receiving the manuscript for The Lord of the Rings, the young editor rejected it with a curt, “Why didn’t they just give the ring to the eagles to drop into the mountain? They don’t seem to be written as easily-corruptible types. This is a lot of walking and fighting for no reason.”

Two years later he was homeless and the leader of a street urchin gang who called themselves the hobbits, despite his protests. They robbed specifically from wealthy writers and publishers, with JRR Tolkien being off limits to all but Chas. His goal was to get the man alone and confront him. He set up a meeting with the man in an alleyway on a foggy evening. (he didn’t plan for the fog, understand, but it sets a good mood, and he was pleased with the effect.)

  1. Thursday Next would love this.

  2. Hahaha! This is great. Anything written based on this idea can’t possibly suck.

  3. I loved this idea. But I knew I had seen it somewhere before. Now I remember where.

    Still a funny idea!

  4. Too easily answered, though. Eagles are conspicuous, and hard to disguise in the air. Hobbits can sneak behind things and pass themselves off as orc-runts. (You can be sure all the small and puny orcs got left behind to do maintenance. Mordor was probably full of them.)
