Oh yah, this is a blog, too, ain’t it?
So I’ve been so busy with the News From Poughkeepsie I haven’t been actually keeping the blog. So here’s the update on me:
I can’t tell you.
Ok, Ok, there are many things I can tell you. I’m currently at RavenCon. It is the last day of the con and some funny funny person gave me a 9am panel. I was up till 3 last night (this morning?) because of attempts to remove gin from my system so I would be tired today instead of hungover. Boy, did I succeed.
The con has been interesting. My very first panel, using the Internet to Market, was attended by a troll who was convinced that nothing would work and we were all wrong. He interrupted frequently and argued most of the time, bragging about his own career. I didn’t have a chance to talk much during the panel, and when I got a chance, and he interrupted me, I lost my temper.
Those who know me know I rarely lose my temper, and it’s even more rare that I do it in public. But dammit, this is something I know about.
The con has looked up from there, with well-attended panels and good times with friends. Last night a rather large group (20+) were gathering for dinner and I got an anxiety attack from just the size of the group, so some of us begged off and had a quieter evening. I hope no one was offended, this was not a slight against any *person*, I just couldn’t handle the crowd. Still, I had a little too much gin a little too late, and found myself in a hallway with Tom Rockwell at 2:30 this morning trying not to fangirl too much. Not sure if I succeeded.
Ah, Friday morning we also got up at 5am to travel to a high school to warp some minds. I spoke to a creative writing class (absolute disaster, but at least I came up with the News item for Friday) and Cmar and I spoke to a Communications class, which went a bit better. It’s easier to have someone to play off of when some of your audience are stretched out on the floor asleep and others are drawing on each others’ feet.

The News From Poughkeepsie is going strong, but it’s a little daunting. As Beatnik Turtle said last year with their daily project, they were going for quantity over quality, and they ended up making amazing songs, and, admittedly, some not so amazing songs. Still, I fret daily over posting things that might be considered stupid or stolen or something worse. But I said I was going to do it, and I will. I don’t know if anyone’s used them yet, which is Ok, cause there’s only been at most 6 days and it takes time to actually create (which is the whole freaking point of this exercise).
I have a panel in half an hour. Let’s hope the troll doesn’t show. and the coffee does. Then I drive home. Let’s hope I stay awake.
Oh, and that thing I can’t talk about. Let’s hope there, too.

Ooh, Poughkeepsie idea! Mild-mannered writer unadvertantly discovers her super powers when a heckler/troll at a conference panel she’s on suddenly vaporizes!
Comment by Nobilis on 27 April 2008:
Whether anyone creates anything from it or not, Mur, I’m enjoying NfP all for itself. Definitely stimulating thoughts.
Comment by solak on 27 April 2008:
Three cheers for Mur’s temper! Just because that troll’s method worked for him does not mean that it is the only way, as we (the readers here) all know from the experience you and others have had in the past few years. It may not be possible to change his mind, but you were right to prevent him from propagating his misconception to your audience.

Computing based on Sturgeon’s Law, I think that if you have to generate 365 ideas in order to create 36.5 good ideas, so be it. At least then you have 36 more good ideas than the year before.
Comment by Jessica on 28 April 2008:
I am dying to know how this temper loss manifested itself. Did you put the troll in his place?
Comment by Rebecca on 4 May 2008:
Reading between the lines on what you can’t tell us…. I bet there will be some VERY good novel publishing news to report soon.
Good luck and we are keeping our fingers crossed!
