“Open this, please.”
That is going to be my new favorite phrase.
I am sick of the packaging in that hard plastic wrapping. Again, just like DRM controls on digital media, they are punishing the law-abiding citizens in order to stymie the crooks. I have been cut by that dreadful plastic, taken precious moments of my time, and my daughter’s impatient time, in opening things, and have used blades that probably weren’t meant for heavy plastic.
What got me today, what pushed me over the edge, was going to Staples to buy a memory card for our new digital recorder at work. Supposedly the evil plastic is designed so thieves can’t rip open packages and steal the stuff inside. But at Staples, the memory cards are encased in boxes that have to be open at the counter. So… we take the boxes to the counter, then they hand us back a tiny memory card encased in a ton of hard plastic with no advice on how to open it. I finally had to take a box cutter to the bastard.
And at that point I realized that it’s not our problem. Fuck the retailers who don’t trust us. The next time I buy something encased in that goddamn plastic, I’m going to pay my bill and then smile sweetly, pass it back to the cashier** and say, “Open this, please.”
**(Yes, I know it is not the cashier’s fault. And that retail work sucks. but I’m at the end of my rope. Should I go to the manager and ask THEM to open it?)
